Building Operative Apprentice
Aarsleff was recommended to me as a great place to do an apprenticeship, so I started out with a short internship. It gave me the opportunity to see whether it was the right fit for me, after which I agreed on a full apprenticeship with Aarsleff's apprenticeship coordinator. There are plenty of opportunities because the company is so large. I can move between different areas when it makes sense and gain experience across a wide range of projects and tasks. I chose the EUX programme because I want the academic side as well, but at the same time I have too much energy to sit still all day. I need to use both my head and my hands. This way, I get the best of both worlds.

I find it exciting that my day-to-day work involves such a wide variety of tasks. I already knew Aarsleff from seeing the company around town, and I expected there would be lots of opportunities as an apprentice in a large organisation – and that expectation has definitely been met. I can hardly describe what a typical day looks like because there’s so much variety. For example, I have been out on several of our construction sites to see what everyday life is like there, and I have found that really exciting. That way, you gain a better understanding of how your work fits into the rest of the business.

I have always had an interest in finance, and it is also where my professional strengths lie. As an apprentice, I had the opportunity to rotate between different finance functions, so I gained experience in various types of accounting from an early stage.
It was important to me to get an apprenticeship with an organisation that was well equipped to support apprentices – and that has definitely been my experience. I went through a structured onboarding process, and from day one there was a clear plan for the tasks I would be responsible for, how my time would be divided between the different departments, and I felt that everything was well organised. That was very reassuring when I was new.

At the moment, I am working on a project for the construction of a harbour bath. But there are many other opportunities, and the workday is varied. There is a good teamwork on the project and a fun atmosphere. Everybody has the same interest in what we are doing, resulting in a high moral standard and high spirits. Aarsleff is taking really good care of the apprentices and makes us feel welcome and comfortable. I met Aarsleff's apprentice coordinator during the first week after I started. He is very accommodating and wants to offer his help and support. It’s nice to have someone to talk to about job satisfaction in addition to your foreman.
