Due to an ever increasing number of large ships calling at Hamburg Harbour it became necessary to deepen the quay berths by three metres in 1999-2000.
In this connection Aarsleff in cooperation with German Ed. Züblin AG was awarded the contract on reinforcement of 200 metres of existing quay.
The reinforcement consisted of a combined wall of tubular piles and sheet piles completed with a concrete cabin beam. From here we implemented a horizontal anchoring ten metres ashore, where the energy was absorbed by a new concrete beam anchored with a land tie.
The work was carried out under normal activity on the quay and while ships were unloaded and loaded. Therefore, horizontal anchoring was necessary in order to avoid undermining the structural frame for the cranes at the harbour.
