The Øresund Fixed Link is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever built in Scandinavia.
The Fixed Link includes a railway and a motorway stretching some 16 km between Kastrup near Copenhagen and Lernacken on the Swedish coast. It consists of a 430m wide, artificial peninsula at Kastrup, an immersed tunnel, a 4,210m long, artificial island called Peberholm and a two-level high bridge.
All stoneworks on this impressive project were executed by Aarsleff. The stone revetments around Peberholm and the artificial peninsula at Kastrup consist of approx. two million tons of stone and cover a distance of more than 13 km. Technically, and because of the very tight project schedule, the revetments constituted one of the biggest challenges on the Øresund Fixed Link project.
The stoneworks were part of a "Design and Construct" contract signed by Öresund Marine Joint Venture on 17 July 1995. The contract was subject to strict requirements as to quality and environmental conditions and included all dredging and reclamation works on the Øresund Fixed Link. For instance, for installation of the elements for the immersed tunnel, 2.2 million m3 of limestone and flint were dredged between Kastrup and Peberholm.
Aarsleff's partners in Öresund Marine Joint Venture were American Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. and Dutch Ballast Nedam Dredging.
