On 1 October 2003, the shopping centre Bruuns Galleri opens in central Århus, Denmark. In this connection a road section is to be extended by two additional lanes.
A bicycle lane and footpath will be discontinued and an extra lane established. In return cyclists and pedestrians will get a new tunnel, which was supplied and installed by Perstrup Beton Industri A/S during a 53-hour suspension of track operation over the weekend 9-10 August 2003. The new tunnel, which is a precast panel tunnel, was established on the western side of an existing railway bridge.
In the course of the 53 hours, the Danish Railway Agency removed tracks and Aarsleff excavated, executed conduit works, base course, casting and backfilling. Finally, the Danish Railway Agency re-established the tracks.
"Due to the transportation of goods on this railway section it was of great importance to the client that we observed the time limit. The train service had to start again rapidly. We stayed within the time limit and the work went according to plan", says senior project manager Gert Nielsen.
Prior to the work executed over the weekend, Aarsleff had secured the bridge stability by means of sheet piles and earth anchors as well as established sheet pile walls at the new tunnel. Sheet piles inside the existing bridge were driven with a mini piling rig, whereas the sheet pile walls were vibrated into the ground.
Aarsleff now starts leading the pavement and bicycle lane through the new tunnel, and excavation work for the roadway where the pavement and bicycle lane used to be are also initiated.
The approx. DKK7 million project includes new wearing course and road marking on the entire section as well as minor alterations on intersections.
